A Devil in the Streets: Kevin Yeung’s Mean Datsun Z

When it comes to a build, we all find our own inspiration whether it be a person, idea or tangible object. What we learn and experience festers in our brain, and grows from a single thought to a whole build. On the way we learn new skills, make new friends and create a car that we can truly be proud of even though, as we all know, will never actually be “done”. For Kevin Yeung, he became addicted all due to an arcade game that featured a monster Midnight Blue “Devil Z” which started him on the path to creating a devil all his own.

The arcade game that the “Devil Z” originated from was Wangan Midnight Max Tune which Kevin had played when he was younger so when he finally was in the right place in his life he jumped on a red 240z. What was meant to be a dream build quickly turned south as the more Kevin dug into the car, the more rust reared its ugly head. Due to the extensive work it needed, Kevin decided to let it go and search for a S30 that would be a better base to start his build on.

After scouring for his next 240z, he finally managed to find one in Los Angeles. The only issue was that he was currently in Hong Kong at the time but as fate would have it, Kevin was able to work things out for the seller. When he arrived back in the states he had a great condition S30 waiting for him, one that would alter his game-plan when it came to building his own “Devil Z”.
Originally, Kevin wanted to transplant a more up to-date heart into his build but after getting such a legit and period correct S30 into his hands, he knew he just couldn’t do it. Kevin, instead, went with a L28 I6 Boosted motor with a beautiful Mikuni Triple Side-Draft Carburetor set-up. On top of the T3T4 that finds its home under hood, Kevin also tracked down a HKS Type 2 Turbo Surge Tank along with a whole array of other modifications.

Bringing his S30 closer to home is a set of Techno Toy Tuning Coilovers with added goodies, Techno Toy Tuning Camber Plates and Tension Control Rods helping Kevin dial his Datsun’s stance in to perfection. Fitted under the classic arches of his 240 are a stunning set of Work Equip 03’s with a custom flat bronze finish that are radically brilliant but also refrain from being outlandish.

To give his S30 even more old-school JDM flair, Kevin added a host of detailed parts to set his Z apart from just a plain ole stock 240. MSA was tapped into the fight providing a Type 1 Air Dam, Fender Flares and Fairlady 432 Wing adding to the already grimacing look that he had created. Small JDM touches like authentic JDM tail-lights and custom JDM front split turn-signals were added to add finishing details.

For the interior, Kevin knew he needed to make changes to accommodate the exterior look. Recaro SPG Seats were installed to wrap around him and paired some Takata Harnesses making sure he was held in place firmly. Kevin then built a custom short hub to match up with his Works Bell Quick Flip that held a Momo Gotham steering wheel squarely in front of him when attacking the pavement.

No matter where you look, Kevin has worked hard to make this car his own. Along with the numerous additions, he also made sure quality accompanied his many modifications to the legendary chassis that he finds in his possession. From the arcade room, to Kevin’s brain, to the California tarmac; Kevin has taken inspiration and an idea to create a wicked devil that is just ready to damn the streets whether it’s parked or tearing down the avenue.
Kevin would like to thank: “My girlfriend Elainna, Eddie, Tony D from Hybrid Z, SEIBON Carbon, Ronald from RS Motors, PlatteForme a.g., 9K Racing, and #TEAMGUNDAM”
